Written on board: "Arizona / (Camp Mc Dowell) / Phot. at A.M.M. / Photograph od earthenware vase, reduced one-half the size nature. / Collected from 3 1/2 feet below surface of the mesa in digging foundation for buildings at Camp McDowell, Arizona Territory by Assistant Surgeon DeWitt, U.S.A., 1871.
