Descriptions
Object Description
Written on board: (verso) The side of human remembrance shows a man of rank with a baton of dignit in the right hand. Before him a species of monkey, "ape" &c. It has been impossible to find out the missing upper piece of this splendid stela. The divine side of the stela shows again Ketsalcoatl as distributor of benefices with the "rope, cord" or "serpent" of the felicities in both hands - one sees again the bee heads on the cord - the nicely worked "chest," "wicker worked chest" before him - a man of the middle class kneeling down and holding the hands upwards to recieve the benefices asked for. Ketsalcoatl on the stela VII, VIII & X has always a big head attached to the back. What does this head signify? All the stelae of Yaxchilan have one or two circular altar-stones nearby, covered with much effaced bas-reliefs. T.M.
