Object Description
Comanche shield. 2 round pieces of thick cowhide. Sewn together around edge. Exterior painted in concentric circles of black, red and yellow. Central design of red horseshoe shape w/ black within and solid orange center. : In the middle are horns, like decoration for buffalo. Horsetail ornament hangs off piece of leather at bottom. The hair attachment is dyed green, and was twisted to keep it attached. 85.2x41.0 cm. Based on smaller size of shield, it most likely post-dates the introduction of the horse to the Comanche.
