Descriptions
Transcribed Annotations
Written in ink on note taped to paper (verso): "An old man. His name, / by coincidence, was / also ≠Toma - the same / as the headman. He / was a sweet and gentle / person around whom / several people [crossed out: people] families congregated / - not because of his / abilities as a leader / but because he was / such a kindly man / and his age made him / not only the head of / his own family but / a figure for / several families. / The people have very little / facial hair and his / beard is large for a / bushman. They average / about 5' 5" (for / men) in height and / 5' 2" or 5' for women. / Their distended stomachs / are a result of malaria / perhaps. No-one know. / Not all the people have / them."
