Hand-painted circular tapa cloth, Siapo mamanu
Descriptions
Object Description
Tapa circular mat with a symmetrical, organic design freehand painted on one side (siapo mamanu). The cloth is relatively thin and made from two thin, off-white colored, evenly pounded sheets felted together. The design utilizes three different pigments including a red-brown with a resinous binder, a matte black and a light yellow-brown (turmeric?). The pattern consists of 4 large amorphous triangles painted black that extend from the center out to the border and divide the design space into equal quarters. Inbetween the triangles are large round botanical shapes (large pandanus leaves?). A similar shape is at the center. There is an outer border with a web-like pattern. Pencil guide-lines are noticeable throughout. The edges are cut.
