Object Description
Tapa cloth. Appears much like a Fijian gatu vakaviti. The majority of the cloth is decorated in the Tongan method with a matte red-brown pigment/dye by rubbing over a design tablet (kupesi) and with black pigment by freehand painting. At the two ends, wide bands with design stencilled primarily in black paint in typical Fijian manufacture known as masi kesa. There are black thick outlined circles with some with a center cross or a center dot. Overall the design is geometric based with leaf or floral motifs and squares, rectangles and triangles and circles. Another similar cloth in the collection is 98-8-70/51703.
