Object Description
Tapa cloth known as ngatu in Tongan. (Listed on catalogue card as Samoan). Medium to heavy weight cloth of multiple (three) layers in most regions, roughly beaten off-white inner bark fibers. Grain direction is widthwise on face and lengthwise on rear. Four cut edges with overlapping joins felted and pasted. Decoration is a combination of wide bands (four langanga) rubbed over a set of leaf design tablets in a matte red-brown and then overpainted with black outlines in a glossy paint. Regions to each side of the bands depict violin or guitar motifs, floral, insect or crown motifs freehand painted in same matte red-brown paint with outlining in same glossy black paint. Groups of three small solid circles are overpainted in same glossy black paint. The Peabody number appears to one lengthwise side in black ink, 60 inches from one end.
