Object Description
Tapa cloth. Medium-weight cloth of roughly beaten inner bark fibers, multiple layers (2 to 3). Grain direction is lengthwise on face and rear. Overlapping joins, pasted. Four cut edges. Entire cloth has been painted and coated with uneven penetration through to the rear side. Cloth was rubbed over a leaf design tablet in matte red-brown paint and then coated thoroughly with a dense brown-black glossy paint (for waterproofing?).
