Object Description
Tapa cloth. Circular, moderately thin cloth made of beaten strips of inner bark fibers. The inner bark strips are combined to form larger sheets; they are created by overlapping, pasting and beating the strips together. The finishing edges are cut; no original pound edge is retained. There are no beater patterns are visible; nor is there any surface texture. One side of the cloth is decorated with a freehand concentric design. It is composed of a central floral or star shaped motif with concentric circles surround it. Leaf, repetitious lines and simple geometric patterns are also highlighted in this cloth. The colors prominent are black, browns and yellow. Identifying marks or numbers: Peabody Museum number appears in black along the edge on the verso.
