Object Description Tapa cloth. Siapo mamanu. Moderately thin rectangular cloth made from pounded off-white inner bark fibers. The cloth is composed of two layers having perpendicular grain directions. Each layer is comprised of smaller fragments that are overlapped, pasted and beaten together. Although both layers are uniformally pounded, many branch hole are present, especially on the underside layer. The finishing edges are cut. One surface of the cloth has a hand-painted decorated surface having a simple black/brown boarder, black/brown crescent shaped moifs, rough brown linear lines and faint black circles. There are no visible beater patterns. Identifying numbers: Peabody Museum catalogue number in red on the verso appears on one edge.
