Descriptions
Object Description
Decorated tapa cloth. Siapo vala? Thin, rectangular cloth made of uniformally pounded off-white inner bark fibers. The cloth is composed of two sheets; in several locations there are more layers. The sheets are overlapped, pasted, pounded together an then cut. The outer sheets/ layers have perpendicular grain directions. One surface of the cloth is decorated, produced by rubbing on a design tablet and by free hand. The mat red/brown decoration obtained by the design tablet is muttled and unclear on the painted surface; a pattern can be detected on the inderside as angular geometric patterns made up of many lines. A network of squares, rectangles with diagonal lines and circles are handpainted in black-brown. There are no visble beater patterns.
Identifying numbers: Peabody Museum number in red appears on the verso, in a corner.
