Descriptions
Object Description
Calumet stem ornamented with eagle feather. A so-called "classic" calumet (McLaughlin 2002), or ceremonial peace pipe, with a round stem and a pendent eagle feather fan. The (blue-green) painted and grooved stem, deliberately combined red and blue trade cloth wrappings, center placement of great horned owl feathers, and seven attached woodpecker scalps and backwards-bent beaks are formal features associated with Hako wands. A copper-colored pendant of wild hemp hangs from the center. A painted-over label reading "Cherokee" is glued to the stem.
