Object Description
Tapa. Cloth appears to be of Samoan production. Medium-weight off-white two layer cloth with decoration primarily on one side by rubbing over a wood carved tablet in a matte red-brown paint, known as a siapo valu. Dark brown-black resinous paint for outlining the geometric blocks. If the tablet was a square (35 x 35 cm) there would be then 3 repeats across the width or perhaps it was a long narrow tablet, 108 cm x 35 cm. The repeat is same for two of the widthwise blocks with the third turned 90 degrees. Four raw/natural edges.
