Display Title Textile of woven raffia cloth
Descriptions
Object Description Textile of woven raffia cloth; three panels sewn together as part of the long wraparound ceremonial skirt for women of the Bushoong royal region. The original beige ground is resist-dyed deep red, varied by a few strokes of grey-black dye. The lower border consists of a wide panel of folded cloth, covered with very fine linear embroidery in doubled outlining of small schematic designs in the typical angular net-like shapes. The rest of the cloth shows scattered small appliques in two rows of stem stitching in standard Kuba shapes: rectangles, arrows, ovals-- some sewn over holes caused by softening of the cloth, others not. Some staining.
Inventory Description Cloth, finely woven fiber, embroidered geometric border, red-brown, spotty
