Object Description
Paddle belonging to birch canoe 96-22-10/50820. Canoe has five tennoned thwarts which fit in and are lashed into mortises in the gunwales. Gunwales are secured to the bark and each other with split root lashing and nails. The bark is pieced together and the seams are stitched together with split root and sealed with pine or spruce pitch. A piece of wood with a large screw-eye is attached by wire to each outer-most thwart. This appears to have been added later for purposes of exhibit installation. The catalog # (50820) is witten in orange on a rib on the floor of the canoe at one end. Dimensions: 177.2cm x 11.4cm x 3.8cm. INFORMATION WAS OBTAINED DURING THE WATERCRAFT RESTORAGE PROJECT, 9/2000
