Object Description
Ivory cribbage board (A) with detachable decorations (B-F) and playing pieces (G). Board made out of a walrus tusk with scrimshaw scenes of everyday life. One side has cross-sectional view of two houses and an igloo with people inside, a seal hunter in a kayak with two seals swimming alongside, a hunter pulling a dead seal, a man ice fishing, and a man with a sled and two dogs. The other side has an outdoor scene with trees and tall grass, a vine motif, and the word "NOME." On the top of the tusk at the narrow end are two small holes where a carved figure in a kayak (B) with detachable oar and a small bird (C) fit. Two short sticks with holes in the ends (D,E) fit in holes in one side of the tusk and support a long stick (F). This configuration gives the effect of an outrigger on the tusk:at. There are eight carved playing pegs (G).
