Object Description
Warp-faced plain weave belt with warp floats, c. 1890s, of red, green and brown s-spun 4-ply wool, composed of five vertical bands. Center band is red with brown and red warp floats in pattern of alternating brown and red horizontal lines followed by pattern of brown chevrons on red background. Outside edges are red, separated from center by green bands. Sides are as woven. Warp ends have been knotted, twisted and knotted again approx every 1 cm to create a webbed fringe. Length: 133 cm, Width: 4.3 cm; Depth: .2 cm. Thread count: Warp -- 112 ends/cm; Weft -- 4 ends/cm. Fair condition. Very stained and has a number of broken warp threads. Some sections of the side selvages are frayed. One end appears to have been cut or worn off and is unraveling.
