Object Description Boudoir card, part of "Alaska Views" series. Dictated by Bill Holm to Dan Jones: The pole seen in closeup in one photo [976-62-10/100167.1.11], is the one in the center of the longer shot [976-62-10/100167.1.14]. It belonged to Chief Skool-ka, the great-great grandfather of the former secretary of .... There are a couple versions of the meaning of it. See the Barboe book on totem poles. Note the European in military uniform; George T. Emmons collected some data suggesting it might be a Russian naval officer. Or perhaps it was a Russian official. We have a scale model of it from a missionary's collection in the Burke Museum, U. of Wash. May have been restored and put in the Totem Park at Haidaberg. It's about 6 ft tall.
