Totem poles at New Gold Harbor on Mandell Island
Descriptions
Object Description
Dictated to Dan Jones by Bill Holm: Prints 552, 553: Caption is wrong: it is not "Gold Harbor", but rather "New Gold Harbor" (native name is Heina) which is on Mandell Island, in Dkitigat Inlet. The town is no longer occupied (Skitigat and Wrangell are occupied). George MacDonald of the National Museum in Ottawa has information on the house. See his little pamphlet on photo exhibition 4-5 years ago. The totem pole broke off right at the beak, i.e. at the line of the roof. The pole to the right of it is in the Field Museum in Chicago. Pole next to the right (with bird on top) was in the Field Museum too, but wehre is it now? As far as Bill knows, none of the other poles in this photograph exist today. Poles
