Descriptions
Object Description
Carved and cut-out wooden canoe ornament for the prow
Description:
Wood sculpture roughly carved and cut out from a single piece of wood in an organic, curvilinear design. Tool marks are noticeable throughout. Certain design elements are accented with a dry red-brown pigment (no apparent binder). Areas of thickly applied white pigment are found throughout on the inner, recessed surfaces. At the base, where it was broken off from the canoe, large sections of the wood are missing, exposing the center. The grain of the wood follows the length of the sculpture.
Originally accessioned as 61-53-70/3965.
