Descriptions
Object Description
Plaited "strawberry" basket (A) with lid (B). Algonquian style (Penobscot? Micmac?); perhaps Mohawk-made. Globular basket with domed lid, plaited (1/1 interlacing) of sweet grass and red-dyed wood splints, and covered with "porcupine twist" decoration. (Splints have faded on outside to brown, but red remains on inside.) Shape resembles that of strawberry; wrapped loop handle on lid fashioned from splint, surrounded by splints shaped to represent leaves (probably originally dyed green). Rim of basket reinforced with additional splints and that of lid with sweet grass, attached by coiling. Almost identical to 995-29-10/73182.
Dimensions: max. height including lid = 9 cm, height to rim = 7.5 cm, max. diameter (lid) = 13.5 cm, max. diameter of basket = 13 cm.
