Quilled birch bark basket with lid; flower motif
Descriptions
Object Description
Heart-shaped bent birch bark lidded basket almost completely covered with decorative porcupine quillwork. Flowered plant in red, purple, orange, and green on lid, sheaf stitch in undyed porcupine quills (white grading to brown) alternating with colored "criss-cross" diamonds in red, dark red, purple, and green on sides of basket and lid. Rims of basket and lid reinforced with bundles of sweet grass sewn on with black cotton thread. Bundles of sweet grass sewn on with natural-colored quills in cross stitch placed at top edge of lid, bottom edge of basket, and on side of basket to act as "lid rest."
Dimensions: height with lid = 7.7 cm, height to rim = 5.7 cm, width = 13.6 cm, depth = 12 cm.
