Written on board: "Huichol / Mexico / Jalisco / 40-88 / N30397 H8118"; Typed caption on mount: "The Singing Shaman (center) and his two assistants chant the minute details of / the 43-day peyote pilgrimage. These singers chant for nearly 20 consecutive / hours. At their feet lies an 'altar' of dried grass in which may be seen two / deer-tail 'plumes' (extreme left and right), a folded serape (center) on which / tamales have been placed, a glass bottle containing the peyote drink made from / fresh peyotes and water, and a gourd bowl for tesguino (corn beer). On his / hat the singing shaman wears squirrel tails, orchids, and a bunch of shamans' / plumes."
