Object Description
Written on board: Huichol / Mexico / Jalisco / Guitar, Violin, Cow's Horn Trumpets, Rattle, and Dried Peyote. See collection list nos. 146, 148, 132, 195. 213, 177 / The owner of the violin carried the instrument with him on a Peyote Pilgrimage and decorated it with peyote symbols painted on with yellow paint made from the root (called "kiéli: in Huichol) which is found in the Peyote country. He also made a new top piece to which the strings are attached of this sacred wood. The back of the violin is marked with the blood of a bull sacrificed at a "Ceremony to Prepare te Soil for seed." The violin is decorated with a band of woven beads and small woven bag containing bees' wax. / photographs copyright by Edwin Forgan Myers
