Display Title Native cloth, tapa
Descriptions
Object Description Native cloth. Small, rectangular lightweight fragment of tapa cloth with evenly beaten inner bark fibers. The cloth is light brown in tone and the grain is vertical. The top and right edges are cut, while the left is torn and the bottom is fringed. Embossing from a rubbing tablet is seen in two vertically striped brown bars, and a diamond beater pattern is seen overall. The design is in three sections. The upper two are black with wide subtle black stripes and an uneven coloration of brown visible underneath. The lowest third is brown. Some freehand application is likely, and both pigments have surface sheen. "4399" is written in black pigment on the reverse.
