Descriptions
Indigenous Term Tapa puakai or Kapa
Object Description Tapa. A small, crisp, thin rectangular cloth composed of a single layer of pounded inner bark fibers. The cloth is evenly pounded; the grain direction of the fiber is parallel to the length. Manufacture related crease lines are present throughout. The finish edges are cut; one edge retains a continuous fiber extending an additional 9 cm out of the rectangular shape. Both surface of the cloth are pigmented or dyed. Several methods such as immersion into mud, daubing or immersion into a dye might have been employed to color the cloth. The application method of the dye is undetermined. Identify numbers or marks: A Peabody Museum catalogue in black appears centrally along one edge.
