Indigenous Term Tapa puakai or Kapa
Object Description Small kapa cloth (puakai ) is fragmentary, cut from a larger cloth. Thin, crisp lightweight cloth made of a single layer of finely beaten inner bark fibers. Very faint beater pattern (squarish/linear) and very similar to the one featured in Brigham Vol. III Plate AA no. 1. The cloth is colored with varying red/orange/brown zig-zag stripes (herringbone pattern) applied with a liner. Additional notes under conservation.
