Descriptions
Indigenous Term
Tapa or Kapa
Object Description
Thin, light weight kapa fragment of finely beaten off-white inner bark fibers. The fibers are so well macerated and enmeshed that joins and boundaries of any individual bark strips present are indicernible. The grain direction of the fibers is parallel to the short dimension of the cloth. All four edges of the cloth are cut. One short edge, however, is less worn and abraded than the others, and appears to have been more recently cut. No manufacture related foldlines are obvious. The cloth is "watermarked" throughout with a beater pattern of very small, diagonally oriented, regularly repeating rectangles. One side of the cloth is decorated with a matte black opaque colorant. The colorant is applied with liners and variously patterned relief cut stamps.
