Descriptions
Object Description
White tapa cloth. Masi vulavula with four cut edges. Simple yet elegant rectangular, off-white colored barkcloth that is decorated overall with a repeating beater pattern. There is no applied pigment decoration an the cloth is the natural color of the inner bark fibers. It is made from a single thin sheet of well beaten barkcloth, and the fibers are so well macerated that there is no discernable grain direction. The beater pattern consists of a series of parallel lines oriented along the length. From slight misalignments within the pattern, it appears that the beater used was approximately 1-2 inches wide. The cloth is made from a single continuous sheet and no joins are present. All edges are cut. Throughout, there are several dark hairs beaten into the cloth.
