Object Description
Barkcloth. An irregularly shaped fragment of ribbed barkcloth; all edges cut--some apparently as a feature of original manufacture, others probably cut later; a rather thick, stiff and dense cloth of light brown beaten inner bark fibers; ribbed overall with narrow repeating parallel grooves pressed in during a final stage in manufacture; a diagonal linear beater impression is discernible under the parallel grooves; one side of the cloth is coated overall, except for a narrow border along one short edge, with a thick opaque matte red colorant; liquid stains, soiling, discolorations and distortions probably related to original use.
