Object Description
Red tapa cloth. Thick, dense and opaque red-brown cloth with a crisp, stiff hand and rough surface texture; beater impressions, as cross directionally overlapping groups of parallel lines, occur throughout; manufacture related draw lines are evident at all four corners; the cloth's fibers are well pounded, and macerated and enmeshed to the degree that it is difficult to discern individual bark strips, their grain direction and precise method of joining; close examination reveals the fibers to be light brown in color; the cloth is colored overall with a reddish-brown earth-like material that has been pounded more heavily into one side; lesser amounts of the colorant occur on the reverse side of the cloth.
