Descriptions
Object Description Basketry hat of woven and coiled split wood strips. The crest of the hat is arched and decorated front to back with clustered black/white feathers (Hornbill?) that have been clipped, attached with braided plant fiber . Both front and back are further decorated with patches of plain weave, blue-striped cotton fabric with applied cowrie shells (5) at the front and animal hide w/ fur at the back. The sides of the hat are accentuated by a repitition of the arch motif with inner decoration of red, blue, white and blue/white glass beads. On the proper right side, the beadwork completely covers the cloth foundation, while on the opposite side, the beads cover only 2/3 of the cloth. Eight strands of copper beads are suspended from both sides below the aforementioned beadwork [see Object Description text entry for extended description]
