Descriptions
Object Description
Beaded Sioux pipe bag from early 1900s, constructed of one piece of soft tanned leather with a vertical side seam stitched in sinew. Below the upper section of exposed leather is a fully beaded panel covering the rest of the open pouch portion. Suspended from this, across the width of the bag, is a substantial parfleche slat panel with decorative quill wrapping and with pendant tin cones and yarn tassels below. The mouth of the bag is bordered by a 12 mm strip of lazy-stitch beadwork of a white background with red and blue square designs at intervals. An edging of seven-bead loops in yellow and dark blue is attached. On each side, and covering the side seams, a vertical strip of beadwork 3.5 cm wide connects this border with the bead panel below, a distance of 24 cm.
