Object Description
Bark cloth cut section. Siapo vala. Medium-weight decorated section from a larger cloth of evenly beaten inner bark fibers; two layers, grain direction perpendicular face and rear. Surface decorated by rubbing over a wood design tablet in a matte gray-brown paint, repeating design; freehand overpainting of triangles and lines in a glossy red-brown paint. If a Samoan cloth, it would be referred to as a siapo. Three raw edges and one cut edge. Similar in design to 5770-71 and 5773-75; coloration is slightly warmer. Cloth appears older than the other fragments mentioned above.
