Descriptions
Object Description
Pieces of wampum showing process of manufacture. This is a set of 32 rectangular bars of shell 58 mm long by 7 mm wide by 7 mm thick which are blanks from which wampum beads would later be cut. Some of the beads have been drilled through from one end while others remain intact. From the overall size of these blanks, it is probable that they would be used in making large wampum beads. They may also have been blanks for making 'hair pins', which were popular items of trade with Plains people. The perfectly rectangular form of these beads, as well as the long holes drilled through them from one end, would seem to indicate that they were made with special machines and drills in a European wampum factory.
