Object Description
Wampum, condolence string. Group of 4 strings of purple wampum beads tied together at one end with an overall length of 20 cm. The four strings have 37, 37, 38 and 39 beads for a total of 155. The beads vary in length from 4 mm to 7 mm and in diameter from 3 mm to 4 mm. Each of the strings is tipped with a piece of red cloth at the free end. The tied ends pass through a piece of leather and then a piece of red cloth. The use of the cloth to adorn wampum strings is found in other specimens (see Harrington 1958: 31-32).
