Object Description
Purple wampum ornament. This is a set of five strings of very large purple wampum beads tied together at one end. The lengths of the strings are 28 cm, 31 cm, 32 cm, and 32 cm. All of the strings as well as the knot that unites them are unornamented. Of particular interest is the extremely large size of the beads in this specimen; 9-26 mm long by 5 mm in diameter. Only one other specimen in the Peabody's collection, 85339, has wampum beads of a comparable size. Whether the role or function of these beads in Native society was the same as that of more standard size wampum beads is uncertain.
