Archaeology and Ethnology, Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass. / John Cone Kimball, Photographer, 1887. / 12 -- Neck of Serpent, showing the Low Mound (about 30 ft. in diameter) at the right, and a Small Mound (about 2 ft. high) just beyond the stump. / The "wash" from the serpent and from the largest of the two mounds, with soil of recent formation, had connected the mound with the serpent. A similar ridge was formed on the southern side of the serpent by the decay of a large tree, about which soil had accumulated to a depth of two or more feet, and the "wash" from the serpent had connected this natural deposit to the embankment.
