Written on board: "California / This Stone Mortar, Diam. 12 1-2 inches, Circum. 37 1-2 inches, Found in 1863, with other Stone Relics and Fossil Mastodon, and other animal remains, in auriferous gravel, 16 feet below the surface on Gold Springs Gulch, Tuolumne County, California."
