Object Description Sash loom with unfinished sash, showing method of weaving. Hopi backstrap loom used by women for weaving sashes, 1892. Loom missing actual backstrap. Warp runs through a reed heddle composed of 78 drilled reeds attached top and bottom to flattened sticks by plied wool binding. Addition wooden handle attached to top of reed heddle and center portion of bottom of reed heddle has had flannel stitched over it. Unwoven end of warp would be attached to raised support. Finished warp wound around dowel which was attached to backstrap to create necessary tension. Reed heddle Length: 69.7 cm; Width: 15.8 cm; Depth: 2.3 cm. Textile: Textile in progress is typical Hopi sash in black, green and red s-spun wool. Five vertical bands, center red band with blackand red warp float pattern [see Object Description text entry for extended description]
