Object Description
Piece of brown tapa cloth colored by smoking known as siapo fa'aasu in Samoan and masi kuvui in Fijian. An opaque, single layered, thin, smooth surfaced cloth of finely pounded reddish-brown inner bark. The cloth appears to be from a single bark strip, as no joins are visible in any of the accessible portions of the cloth. The bark fibers are oriented longitudinally, and manufacture related fold creases traverse the width of the cloth at 6 to 10 cm intervals. One width-wise edge of the cloth has been finished with a narrow, approximately 7 cm long straight cut fringe. The accessible length-wise edges also appear to have been fringed at one time. The remaining width-wise edge is irregular, with long, finely pounded diaphanous extensions. A tapa dress of similar cloth is [see Object Description text entry for extended description]
