Object Description
Pair of tassels from the early 1900's, to be attached to a Hopi maiden wedding manta, on the lower corners. The tassels are based on a large bundle of handspun cotton 2-ply yarn, which are used as warp elements in the "ear" of the corn tassel, where a dark brown fibrous cord is wrapped around the white base letting the white show through the brown wrap in a spiraling pattern of squares. The size of this pattern is three strands wide of each white (running the length of the "ear") and brown (weft-wise, wrapped around continuously.) The "ear" is 10.5 cm long, and 2.8 cm in diameter. The ends of the white cotton yarn make a broad, full, fluffy tassel when the tight portion ends.
