Object Description
Carved wooden helmet mask with a blue and white painted stylized face and black helmet which has an animal figure on top. Raffia collar. This Hembe type helmet mask has partially closed eyes, a circular mouth and a recessed face painted white with black and blue stylized detailing on the face. The face is edged with a hairline that comes to a point on the central forehead. The coiffure is stained black and has an incised triangular pattern. There is an antelope superstructure surmounting the coiffure. A long strip of textile is tied around the legs of the animal. There is a thick raffia fringe at the bottom of the mask. The bottom edge of the mask is longer in the front.
