Object Description
Chimayo style mat or hanging. Weft-faced plain weave. Warp is blue-grey heathered 2-ply s-spun z-twisted wool yarn, 4 elements/cm. The weft is a dark red base, with a central element of a rectangular form with triangular notches removed from each short side (like a flattened butterfly form). It is divided into quarters, which alternate black and white, and inside this black and white design is a smaller one in red and turquoise. On either side of the design and toward the edges of the weaving are striped portions with stripes in white, black, and turquoise. There are 9 weft elements/cm. At either end is a fringe, each fringe element composed of 4 warp elements, knotted.
Height/warp is 24 cm, 30 cm with fringe. Width/weft is 23-23.5 cm. Depth is .2 cm.
