Object Description
White cotton rain sash with fringe from 1970s-1980s. Body of sash is a twill weave 140 cm long, 14 cm wide, and .4 cm deep. Warp is natural-white colored commercial cotton cord, 8-ply z-spun elements S-twisted together, and has 6 threads to the cm. The weft is a slightly different shade of natural beige cotton, commercial, 4-ply z-spun S-twisted and has 5 threads per cm. The selvages are finished with two strands of slightly darker natural cotton (s-twisted z-spun 4-ply) that are twined over the weft threads along the edge. at the ends of the woven portion, the warp is split into 7 clusters. These are subdivided into 6 2-ply elements, which are braided. The resulting braid is 2 cm wide and 2.5 cm long, and the braiding terminates inside rings made of cord (8-ply z-sp[see Object Description text entry for extended description]
