Object Description
White cotton sash with long fringe, c. 1880. Interlaced sprang technique, using handspun natural-colored cotton consisting of two z-spun strands, s-twisted. Interlaced body of sash 134 cm, with an additional weft element inserted in two rows of interlacing over and under 3 yarn elements at a time. The ends of this inserted cord are frayed at the ends. Sprang portion of the sash is 134 cm long, 20 cm wide, and .4 cm thick. There are 11 yarn elements per cm across the width of the sash. At the conclusion of the sprang portion, the elements are divided into 18 small braids, approximately 3.5 cm long, composed of 12 strands of thread fromed into 4 cords which are braided.
