Object Description
Large weft-twined square bag from the Great Lakes region, dating to the turn of the twentieth century. Warp cords are of a twine cordage, hemp or jute most likely, which is s-spun. Each warp is composed of approximately six strands of twine, in clusters of three, z-twisted, and then those two cords z-twisted again. Weft yarn is inconsistent in spin, weight, twist, and possibly fiber content, though most seems to be commercial z-spun s-twisted wool, aniline dyed, in muted mulicolors including beige, navy blue/purple, green, pink/red and black. The weft elements are three plies of yarn in each row. Often these wefts are two or three tones of yarn, adding complexity of shading (the navy blue weft elements are two plies of blue yarn and one of purple; the pink wefts are two pin[see Object Description text entry for extended description]
