Object Description
Woven belt/sash with warp-faced weaving in black and white, and floated weft elements in multicolors. Guatemala; Totonicapán; from 1970's-1990's. Designs depict a variety of figures, including a pair of fists, a row of women holding hands, a beetles, a spider, rabbits, people, tree of life, birds, and quadrupeds. The warps in the main body of the belt are both black and white 3-ply s-spun, z-twisted commercial cotton string, and are manipulated so as to show as black or white on the surface as suits the design. Generally the white is the "background" color, while designs are made in black. The warps are spaced enough, and hidden, to expose the floating weft elements, which are in stripes of 4 rows of weaving wide each color, in random rotation.
