Object Description
Whimsey from the early 1900s. This handbag whimsey is a stiff tubular box style, wide and deep at the bottom and tapering upward to a rectangular top opening. It is constructed of one large section forming the front, the curved bottom, and the back. The depth dimension is shaped by separate ovoid side pieces measuring 9 cm high by 8.5 cm across. A rectangular cover piece 8.5 cm wide and 6.25 cm deep is attached at its long side to the top of the back section. The stiff interlining in the body and cover is probably cardboard. Beige plain weave cotton fabric covers the outside on all parts. The lid piece is lined with a red glazed cotton and the body with a coarser plain weave off-white fabric, probably linen towcloth.
