Descriptions
Object Description Colcha textile. Wool on cotton 'sabanilla' (and linen?). Floral border, birds and florals with three trees and two men on horseback, grey framing edge. What appears to be supplementary warp of fine cotton thread on back side, used to anchor embroidery stitches. Selvages are folded and stitched, top and bottom have also been embroidered. Length: 118 cm; Width: 160.5 cm; Depth: .5cm. Thread count: Warp -- 8 ends/cm; Weft -- 4 ends/cm. Very good condition. Some fraying of selvages on left and top edges. Some missing weft threads under foliage of tree on right. Colchas were produced by Spanish colonials living in New Mexico and other parts of the southwest. The were styled after the shawls worn by Spanish women, known as Spanish Shawls, but actually imported from China. Mos[see Object Description text entry for extended description]
